UNIVERSITY OF SUDBURY
The University of Sudbury Formalizes its Secular Status by, for and with Francophones

September 27, 2021

In a historic decision for the University of Sudbury, the institution's Board of Regents has adopted a major reform of its general bylaws that confirms that the institution is now 100% secular and governed by, for and with Francophones.

At the service of the Francophonie and rooted in its community since 1913, the University of Sudbury has made French its official working language in this new bylaw and has made the institution non-denominational. The University of Sudbury intends to continue its work to develop innovative and modern university programming for the entire francophone community, focused on the student experience and community involvement.

In a historic decision, the Board of Regents of the University of Sudbury has adopted a major reform of its general regulations. Serving the Francophonie since 1913, the University of Sudbury is now a secular French-language institution, governed by, for and with Francophones.

"This decisive decision for the future of our institution meets all the criteria required by the province to establish public funding for the University of Sudbury. We are working hard to offer programming that will contribute to the economic, social and cultural development of Greater Sudbury and all of French Ontario and the Canadian Francophonie," said Pierre Riopel, Board of Regents President.

"The Franco-Ontarian community has asked the University of Sudbury to transform itself into a university governed by, for and with Francophones. The adoption of this new regulatory framework is one more step in fulfilling the commitment of our Board of Regents and the Franco-Ontarian community to have a French-language university as soon as possible. The University of Sudbury continues to work with governments and the community to make this long-standing dream a reality," said Serge Miville, President and Vice-Chancellor of the institution.

A reminder that on March 11, 2021, the Board of Regents of the University of Sudbury unanimously adopted a resolution to take the necessary steps to become a French-language university as soon as possible.
