The University of Sudbury welcomes the appointments of Pablo Rodriguez and Ginette Petitpas-Taylor as Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister of Official Languages respectively.
The University of Sudbury invites the Minister of Official Languages to continue the government's close collaboration with the institution to support the implementation of a "By, for and with" solution for Francophones in Northeastern Ontario and to secure and sustain the future of French-language university education in the region.
On August 31, 2021, the federal government made a historic commitment to the University of Sudbury to double the budget envelope for post-secondary education in minority communities and to support the "By and for" governance model. The work now has to continue in order to deliver concrete results for the northern francophone community.
The University of Sudbury would like to congratulate Ms. Mélanie Joly for her leadership on the file of post-secondary education in French in a minority setting and for her new role as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
"I would like to congratulate Ms. Petitpas-Taylor on her appointment. We will be seeking a meeting with her soon to continue the excellent cooperation between our institution and her ministry. The new post-secondary fund, which should be made permanent and increased, has the potential to significantly support our transformation," said Serge Miville, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sudbury.
The University of Sudbury, founded in 1913 as the Collège du Sacré-Coeur, is Ontario's first French language post-secondary institution and is a secular university governed "By, for and with" Francophones. It hosted the very first Franco-Ontarian flag raising in 1975.
