OTTAWA CATHOLIC SCHOOL BOARD
St. Pius X Students Take Centre Stage at Ottawa City Council Meeting

May 12, 2025

A Moment to Remember

There is something powerful about hearing the Canadian national anthem performed live, especially when it is led by talented students whose passion fills the room.

St. Pius X High School students recently had the honour of opening a City of Ottawa Council meeting with a stirring rendition of "O Canada." Under the direction of music teacher Michael Sasso, the St. Pius Xpress Band delivered a performance that set a tone of pride, hope, and unity for the entire session.

Student Leadership in Action

The anthem was led by Chiara Frangione, newly elected Ottawa Catholic School Board student trustee, whose leadership and artistry continue to inspire her peers and the broader community.

Before the performance, Councillor Riley Brockington introduced the students, highlighting their active contributions to school life and community events. The St. Pius Xpress Band is a well-known presence at significant school milestones, including graduations and fundraisers like the Terry Fox Run. Many members also participate in the school's R&B band, where they develop their improvisational skills and expand their musical boundaries.

A Culture of Creativity

Beyond performances, the arts community at St. Pius X is flourishing. Michael Sasso has been instrumental in supporting students by arranging original compositions that highlight their strengths. This spirit of creativity was also evident in the recent production of Die Verwandlung, an original musical inspired by Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis that showcased collaboration, innovation, and artistic excellence.

Building Connections Through Music

The performance at City Hall was more than a musical moment; it was a celebration of student leadership, civic engagement, and the important role young people play in shaping Ottawa's future. It reflected the Ottawa Catholic School Board's commitment to nurturing students who are not only academically strong but also active, confident contributors to their communities.

Congratulations

Congratulations to the students of St. Pius X High School, Michael Sasso, and everyone who supported this inspiring event. Their music reminded all in attendance that young voices have the power to unite, uplift, and make lasting change.
