The CWB Welding Foundation announces the three Canadian secondary school recipients that received $30,000 collectively from the new Forged by Youth' (FBY) award. Among them is Pontiac High School of Shawville, Que., receiving $15,000 taking first place.

"The FBY Award celebrates the creativity and effort involved in secondary school welding projects," said Susan Crowley, Executive Director, CWB Welding Foundation. "In continued support of secondary school welding facilities, the Foundation is proud to announce the inaugural 2021 Forged by Youth Award winners that recognizes outstanding class projects with a financial award for each winning school's welding program."

Educator Megan Tubman submitted the application showcasing the fire bowl project on behalf the students at Pontiac High School. Twenty-two senior students participated in the project for the winning submission from start to finish. This included brainstorming ideas, creating the shop drawings, job costing, cutting, and prepping, fitting and fabrication as well as welding.

Pontiac High School currently runs four welding courses; including grades 7 and from 9 - 11 with approximately 60 students enrolled. Of those enrolled approximately 20% identify as female. Students are given an opportunity to complete the SMAW test at the end of each school year.

"We are honoured to receive this award. We are going to put it to good use, by purchasing a CNC plasma burn table for our shop. This will allow the students to be introduced to some programing of equipment and to see how parts can be produced." said Megan Tubman. Also, the principal of Pontiac High - Debra Stephens stated, "We are so very proud of our PHS Welding students and their educator, Megan Tubman. The Welding Program exemplifies the mission of Pontiac High School- to ensure that everyone achieves individual excellence. Thank you to the CWB Welding Foundation for their continued support."

To be eligible to apply for the award, the applicants had to be a full-time welding educator at a secondary school in Canada. The educator must submit a class project that has been completed in either the 2019-2020 or 2020-2021 school year. For more information visit www.cwbweldingfoundation.org/programs
