JUMP Math, in collaboration with the Toronto Foundation for Student Success (TFSS), is pleased to share the outcomes to-date of a three-year JUMP Math Tutoring initiative conducted at TFSS' beyond 3:30 after-school program, which supports kids in Priority Neighbourhoods across Toronto.
Thanks to generous support from TD Bank Group and an anonymous foundation over the past two years, the JUMP Math Tutoring component of the beyond 3:30 program has benefitted more than 2,100 children in Grades 3-8, who encountered learning loss due to COVID-related school disruptions. The program has worked to bridge educational gaps by bolstering student's math skills and nurturing their confidence to lay a solid foundation for their future success in math.
As part of the program, beyond 3:30 instructors introduced a number of math modules created by JUMP Math, including Number Sense and Operations for both the junior and senior participants. They also delivered engaging games, mental math activities, and resources, created by JUMP Math to enhance participant engagement and lesson retention. In addition, participants completed a module on Financial Literacy developed by JUMP Math, further enriching the program's impact.
"Working with JUMP Math has been a great experience. Seeing the students improve their math skills and learn to correct their own mistakes throughout the year has been very rewarding it lets us know as staff that what we're doing matters," said a Site Coordinator at beyond 3:30.
The assessments conducted to gauge participant progress on the math topics covered during 2022 sessions revealed an average 17.7% increase in children scoring perfectly on modules over 2021. They also showed an improved attitude toward math, marked by a 17% increase in positive responses to the statement, "people can get better at math.".
"As a longtime supporter of educational initiatives focused on early learning, TD believes that by providing children with the opportunity to develop and improve their math skills, we are helping provide a foundation to succeed in both school and in life," says Robyn Small, Senior Manager, Philanthropy, Sustainability & Corporate Citizenship, TD Bank Group. "That's why we're proud to support programs like JUMP Math through our corporate citizenship platform, the TD Ready Commitment, as they work to foster a love of math in students, offering unique and inclusive spaces for learning."
This initiative, which started as a small pilot project in 2021, has since expanded to offer in-person and online resources across 19 schools, tailored to diverse student needs. JUMP Math provided the math resources, training, and support to beyond 3:30 staff who were then able to facilitate and deliver approximately 48,858 hours of math instruction to students in the program in the past year alone. This comprehensive approach ensured that program participants gained fundamental and essential math confidence and skills.
"The JUMP Math programming has had such a positive impact on the kids in our beyond 3:30 program over the past two years", said Catherine Parsonage, Executive Director, TFSS. "Our goal is to help remove barriers that prevent children in underserved communities from thriving in school, and this partnership has allowed us to provide the additional support needed to help students excel in math and build confidence that will help lead them to brighter futures."
JUMP Math CEO, Ken Aucoin underscored the meaningful difference this initiative is making for kids in these priority communities. "As a charitable organization dedicated to advancing equity through math education, we are pleased with the positive outcomes achieved through our joint efforts with this program, especially the significant improvements made in student math performance and attitudes."
This initiative is research-driven and committed to further enhancing all children's success in their educational journey. To learn more, visit https://tfss.ca/beyond-330/.
