MCDOWELL FOUNDATION
Research Highlights Ongoing Contributions of Retired Teachers

May 6, 2025

Retirement does not mark the end of contributions made by teachers to the teaching profession and Saskatchewan's education community.

Retired Teachers and their Ongoing Contribution to Teaching and Learning in Saskatchewan, a research project funded by the McDowell Foundation, was undertaken to raise awareness within the profession of the extraordinary resource represented by the province's retired teachers

Researcher Janet Lowndes will share results of her study and discuss the ways in which retired teachers continue to contribute to the profession during a McDowell Foundation Salon Series webinar on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, 7 to 8:30 p.m. The webinar is open to teachers and the public. Registration details are available on the Foundation's website.

Retirees who choose to return to teaching whether as substitute teachers or contract instructors bring years of in-school experience and professional learning which can serve as a valuable resource for less-experienced colleagues. Beyond the classroom, retired teachers build upon their experiences and training to engage in educational research aimed at improving the teaching and learning environment. Others may choose to continue to serve the profession by working with the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation, local chapters of the Superannuated Teachers of Saskatchewan, or the McDowell Foundation.

The McDowell Foundation provides funding grants for teacher-led research in the province. Salon Series events are an opportunity for Saskatchewan's teachers to share their research with the wider community. Visit www.mcdowellfoundation.ca to learn more about teacher-led research in the province.
