Charlottetown City Council passed a formal resolution for the University of Prince Edward Island's women's field hockey team at its last Council meeting.
The resolution encourages the team members to stay committed to their program as student athletes for the upcoming school year even though they can no longer compete for an AUS or CIS Championship title.
"It's a real shame that a change in Atlantic University Sport policy no longer allows for the UPEI women's field hockey team to compete at a national level," said Councillor Mitchell Tweel, Chair of the City's Parks, Recreation and Leisure Activities Committee. "Being Chair of a committee focused on recreational activities, I felt we needed to do something, so we passed a resolution to encourage the team. We don't want them to get discouraged and give up on the sport."
