POSITION
Teacher - Nursing (Fall 2023 Term)

The college is seeking a part-time professor (Clinical Instructor) to teach credited courses (clinical) within the Nursing program in the Fall 2023.

Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO inpatient) – Mondays (day/evening rotation) from October 30th to December 4th with availability to the college as of October 10th, 2023 for meetings and hospital orientation. 7.5 hours per day (6 shifts) - Total 45 hours plus availability.

180-A36-HR PEDIATRIC NURSING
This course includes the basic nursing concepts required to care for children and families within the pediatric hospital and community settings. The student will develop an understanding of growth and developmental tasks and events, lifestyle, pathologies and nursing problems related to the pediatric client in a multicultural society. The concepts of ethics, rights and responsibilities, collaboration with others and social involvement are addressed within the context of pediatrics. In the laboratory and clinical setting, the student is taught the knowledge and skills relevant to the specific pathologies and nursing problems.

180-D11-HR INTRODUCTION TO NURSING
The student will learn the concepts basic to the role of the professional nurse. The student will learn and begin to apply the nursing process Allen/McGill Nursing Model, and critical thinking. The concepts of personal and professional growth and responsibilities will be explored. The student will be introduced to the Canadian and Quebec Health Care System. In the laboratory setting the student is taught nursing procedures which form the foundation of nursing such as the clinical examination. In the chronic care clinical setting the student will have the opportunity to apply the theory, skills and attitudes taught in theory/lab. The student will demonstrate safe
application of assessments and interventions relating to hygiene, VS, feeding, clinical assessment, therapeutic interactions, infection control, the identification of complication of immobility and sage clinical practice. The student will demonstrate understanding the role of the nurse and the responsibilities of a nursing student.

DESCRIPTION:
The Heritage College Nursing Program provides a full-time, three-year RN competency-based diploma program. Given that nursing is a practice-based profession, we believe that clinical experience is a vital and integral component of the curriculum, providing students with hands-on opportunities to practice their nursing skills under direct supervision of their clinical instructor. The clinical instructor supports student learning, liaises with assigned nurses in a clinical unit and collaborates with the Faculty Team Leader. The clinical instructor role is an essential and powerful component of nursing education.

Requirements

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Attend clinical instructor and student hospital orientation for 180-A36 HR
  2. Attend and assist students with skills lab when clinical groups are in a Lab environment or using the Simulation Lab.
  3. Collaborate with course faculty: ensure ongoing communication with course team leader.
  4. Attend weekly student progress meetings online.
  5. Participate in a one (1) full day of practical performance evaluation at the end of the semester.
  6. Support student learning:
  • Select appropriate patient assignment as per clinical pedagogy.
  • Direct supervision and monitor student performance in clinical setting;
  • Organize pre-post conferences online;
  • Review and offer weekly written and verbal feedback of student learning objectives;
  • Review and discuss student midterm self-assessments;
  • Assess student progress and complete final student evaluations;
  • Ensure completion of student clinical assignments and assess competency as per rubric within the given time frame. Liaise with faculty to ensure coherence across class;
  • Conduct midterm and final evaluation with students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Nursing, and several years of teaching experience at the university or college level is preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years of Pediatric Nursing Experience
  • Fluency in English and in French, both oral and written is required.
  • Knowledge of software as per program requirements is necessary.
  • Must be a member of the College of Nurses of Ontario.
