GRANDE PRAIRIE PUBLIC SCHOOL DIVISION
GPPSD Teacher Receives Regional Award for Exemplary Promotion of Student Mentorship

June 8, 2023

The Grande Prairie Public School Division (GPPSD) proudly announces Mrs. Edna Schellenberg, a dedicated Grade 8 teacher at Isabel Campbell Public School, has been honoured with the Energizing Communities Champion Award for her outstanding contributions to promoting social and emotional learning (SEL) through Classroom Champions. This award is the first for a teacher in the City of Grande Prairie and serves as a testament to her commitment to enriching student experiences.

Classroom Champions provides a unique opportunity for students to virtually connect with world-class athletes, embarking on a transformative year-long curriculum centered around the athlete mindset. During their sessions, the athlete takes students on a journey, delving into critical areas such as goal setting, perseverance, teamwork, and leadership, equipping them with invaluable strategies to overcome challenges and unlock their full potential.

Over the past five years, Schellenberg's partnership with Classroom Champions has left an indelible impact on her students. She explains it as an extraordinary opportunity to expose students to positive, hard-working role models. "Being in a northern community, having access to real athletes is a privilege," she explains. "Students learn that these athletes are real people facing real obstacles, making the experience deeply personal." She says her goal is to inspire students to strive for excellence in their personal and academic lives.

The award presentation was a heartwarming surprise from her students and fellow staff members. As she entered the gymnasium, the applause and celebration left her momentarily speechless. "This is truly special," she shares. "The award is a testament to the students' achievements. I hold immense love for my students and always seek ways to provide more for them." Representatives from Classroom Champions including Colin Hodgson, a recently retired professional Canadian curler (originally from Lacombe, Alberta), were there to add to the memorable occasion.

Schellenberg's decision to initiate this collaboration stems from her personal experience. She has been actively involved in athletics since elementary school, giving her a deep understanding of the profound difference athletics can make in students' lives.

The Grande Prairie Public School Division extends heartfelt congratulations to Mrs. Schellenberg on this well-deserved award. Her unwavering commitment to creating an exceptional learning environment and empowering each student to succeed exemplifies the values and mission of the Division.
