Indigenous Perspectives Conference and Black History Month highlight diversity initiatives at RDP in February

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) continues to provide opportunities for its community to learn about cultures, history and diverse perspectives through a variety of impactful events and initiatives.

In early February, RDP hosted a student-led Indigenous Perspectives Conference, providing opportunities for participants to learn about Indigenous ways of knowing and being. The Polytechnic is also recognizing Black History Month throughout February, highlighting the contributions and lived experiences of Black students, employees and community members.

"At Red Deer Polytechnic, we are committed to continue fostering an inclusive and respectful culture that values all students, employees and stakeholders," says Lindsay Engel, Vice President, Academic and Student Experience. "By offering a variety of culturally immersive opportunities at RDP, members of our campus community are able to expand their knowledge, perspectives and engage in meaningful dialogue on a range of topics."

Along with being able to participate in the Opening Pipe Ceremony at the Indigenous Perspectives Conference, attendees were able to select from a breadth of sessions that included Drumming and Storytelling, Indigenous Art and Tipi Teachings. Participants also enjoyed an Indigenous meal.

The conference complements the range of Indigenous initiatives that are offered at Red Deer Polytechnic throughout the year, such as Sharing Circles, Indigenous Flag Raising Ceremonies and the recognition of Métis Week. All Indigenous events and initiatives at RDP are components of the institution's larger commitment to Indigenous education and Truth and Reconciliation as guided by its Reconcili-Action Plan 2023-2028.

Throughout February, RDP is acknowledging Black History Month through displays and events that are collaboratively organized by faculty, staff, learners and the Students' Association. These initiatives include a Black History Book Display, an Afro-Caribbean Night and a virtual presentation by RDP alum Rochelle Ignacio, Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Tamarack Institute for Community Engagement. Throughout the month, Red Deer Polytechnic is also sharing relevant stories and experiences of RDP learners, alumni and employees on its social media platforms.

"While some of these important on-campus initiatives are time specific, we are dedicated to advancing our commitment to Indigenization and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion throughout the year," adds Ms. Engel. "We are proud to offer a variety of academic, cultural and social opportunities for both domestic students, which includes Indigenous learners, and International students, enriching their entire postsecondary experiences."
