April 9, 2024

Nearly 40 Saskatchewan Polytechnic students won either gold, silver or bronze medals in this spring's provincial skills competition hosted by Skills Canada Saskatchewan. Fourteen of the winners are also apprentices, registered with the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC) and trained by Sask Polytech.

"The provincial Skills Canada Saskatchewan competition celebrates the talents, dedication and creativity of students and apprentices training for a career in the skilled trade and technology fields," shares Dr. Larry Rosia, Sask Polytech president and CEO. "This dynamic event showcases a broad range of fulfilling and rewarding careers that are achievable through a polytechnic education, emphasizing hands-on learning. Congratulations to our participants and finalists."

"Congratulations to all the apprentices who competed at this year's provincial competition," says Jeff Ritter, SATCC CEO.  "New apprenticeship registrations are up, which tells us employers are actively recruiting and hiring. Now is a great time to pursue apprenticeship and a career in the skilled trades in Saskatchewan."

The  Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC) oversees and administers the apprenticeship system in Saskatchewan. The organization trains apprentices; certifies tradespeople and apprentices; regulates the apprenticeship system; and promotes apprenticeship. Institutions such as Sask Polytech are contracted by the SATCC to provide apprenticeship training across the province.

Apprentices and post-secondary students from across Saskatchewan competed in 17 categories for medals and the chance to represent the province at the Skills Canada National competition May 29 - June 1 at ExpoCité in Quebec City.

Competition categories ranged from technical skills including graphic design, game development, electronics; to skilled trades such as plumbing; bricklaying; carpentry; machining; aesthetics, hairstyling and welding.

Skills Canada Saskatchewan plays a crucial role in promoting and developing the skilled trades in Saskatchewan. The organization provides opportunities for students to showcase their skills and knowledge in various skilled trades through competitions. Skills Canada Saskatchewan helps students develop their confidence and encourages them to continue their education in the skilled trades to prepare for future careers. Events were held at Sask Polytech's Regina campus in March.

Congrats to the Sask Polytech winners! Some of the gold and silver winners will continue onto the Skills Canada National competition this spring.
