HIGH PRAIRIE SCHOOL DIVISION
Dual Credit Coach Recognized Nationally For Leadership in Youth STEM Education

May 29, 2025

Mrs. Kristen Blanchette, Dual Credit Coach with High Prairie School Division, has been nationally recognized for her exceptional contributions to youth STEM education. She is one of just nine individuals across Canada to receive the 2025 Distinguished Service Award from Youth Science Canada - a prestigious honour that celebrates innovation, leadership, and dedication in supporting young scientists.

Kristen has played a vital role in shaping science and innovation opportunities for students in northwestern Alberta. For the past ten years, she has served on the Peace Regional Science Fair organizing committee and has been instrumental in helping students transition to the Canada-Wide Science Fair. Her work has supported countless students in exploring their curiosity and showcasing their scientific talents.

"Science fair provides another area for some students to really shine students who may not always get the spotlight otherwise," Kristen shared. "I find it so rewarding to watch returning students grow in confidence and in the quality of their research and presentations each year."

Kristen's passion for science fairs began early. "Growing up, I remember being amazed by the older students' projects at our school science fair," she said. "When I started teaching, I brought the fair back to our school and later joined the regional committee to help it grow. As a high school chemistry and biology teacher, I really see the value in science fairs."

Among her most memorable moments was attending the Canada-Wide Science Fair with one of her students. "It was so powerful to see the experience through my student's eyes," she recalled. "Students are always a mix of nervous and excited, and I love being at the registration table to see that energy."

Born, raised, and now raising her own family in northern Alberta, Kristen holds a Bachelor of Science from Augustana University and an After-Degree from Campus Saint-Jean at the University of Alberta. After a decade teaching junior and senior high sciences, she currently serves as the Dual Credit Coach for High Prairie School Division while pursuing her Master of Education. Outside of work, Kristen enjoys helping on the family grain farm with her husband and two children, spending time outdoors, reading, and sitting around a campfire sharing stories.

High Prairie School Division extends heartfelt congratulations to Kristen Blanchette on this well-earned recognition. Her leadership and dedication continue to make a lasting impact on students, schools, and the future of science education in our region.
