The Louis Riel School Division is proud to celebrate two outstanding recipients of the 2025 Manitoba School Boards Association (MSBA) Student Citizenship Awards: Abigail Ochoa, a dedicated student volunteer, and the Black and Gold Society, a student group from Dakota Collegiate.
These prestigious awards recognize students across Manitoba who exemplify exceptional citizenship, leadership, and community service. This year, both an individual and a group from our division have been honoured for their inspiring contributions.
Abigail Ochoa, a high school student known for her compassion and commitment, began volunteering in Grade 10. What started as a way to earn a school credit quickly became a passion. From volunteering at St. Amant and a local nursing home to helping out at Ronald McDonald House Charities even while on vacation Abigail's dedication has never wavered.
"For me, it doesn't feel like I'm working towards a credit," Abigail shared. "I feel like I'm actually going out and helping these people." She especially cherishes her time at Actionmarguerite in Saint Boniface, where she connects with Francophone residents in their native language. "When I greet them in French, their faces light up. That makes it all worth it."
The Black and Gold Society, a student-led group at Dakota Collegiate, was recognized in the group category for its wide-reaching impact. The society is known for organizing events like Senior Night, Transition Day for incoming Grade 8 students, and the school's Open House. They have also volunteered at the Dakota Community Centre.

"It's a really good feeling," said Ushna Gull, a member of the society. "We've worked hard, and we're very involved in the community. This club has such a powerful impact in a positive way."
The award presentations will take place at the recipients' schools, allowing family, friends, and the school community to join in the celebration. Both Abigail and the Black and Gold Society will also be featured in a slideshow at MSBA's fall regional meetings.
Congratulations to Abigail and the Black and Gold Society for their inspiring leadership and service. You make the Louis Riel School Division proud!
