Medicine Hat College (MHC) celebrated its biggest donation in history today, with $5 million pledged to support healthcare education in Southeast Alberta and a vision for future capital growth.
Local entrepreneur Bill Yuill and the Yuill Family Foundation have long been a leader in giving back to Medicine Hat and beyond, enriching opportunities in education, youth sport and health-related initiatives that include the Margery E Yuill Cancer Centre and Medalta's Yuill Family Gallery.
This donation will inspire new ways to engage in health-related learning experiences and enhance existing educational opportunities at MHC including program development, simulation training and applied health research. It also demonstrates support for future joint wellness facilities.
"My family has been here for 135 years. Medicine Hat is our home," says donor Bill Yuill, alongside wife Elizabeth. "Over generations, we've worked hard to build family, build business and build community. This gift will provide new opportunities for young people to build their careers and future in this region we call home."
President Kevin Shufflebotham notes the impact of the donation and the legacy it creates for Medicine Hat College.
"When I think about our institution, I take great pride that we are learner focused, and regionally aligned.'
"The college is honoured to work with the Yuill Family Foundation to bring this gift to life and recognize their legacy by attaching the Yuill name to ours. When we begin the next academic year, we will proudly welcome students to the Yuill School of Health & Community Services."
The Honourable Rajan Sawhney, Minister of Advanced Education, provided the following statement.
"Expanding health care education outside of Alberta's two largest cities is an important part of building a better health care system for all Albertans. Partnerships in communities like Medicine Hat are crucial to making this happen.
"The Yuill Family Foundation's donation to improve health care programming at Medicine Hat College is an extraordinary gesture of community support."
The naming celebration for the School of Health & Community Services will be held in September 2025.
