For the first time, the elementary site of the BC Provincial School for the Deaf received a hand-delivered copy of the proclamation of a week recognizing the significance and contributions of Deaf communities, culture, and people.
Jodie Wickens, the Minister of Children and Families, wanted to personally deliver the BC Government's proclamation of the annual International Week of Deaf People and International Day of Sign Languages:
"It is a time for us to celebrate culture, history, and contributions of Deaf, Deaf-Blind and Hard of Hearing communities in BC."
The Minister was given a tour of the elementary site of the BC Provincial School for the Deaf (BCSD) and the Provincial Outreach Program: Deaf and Hard of Hearing (POPDHH). Both provincial programs are administered by the Burnaby School District.
Cathy Bennett, the Principal of BCSD, said that it was very meaningful to have the students gather to watch as the Minister handed over the proclamation.
"This is about visibility and respect. It's not just a piece of paper, it's the Minister showing up, meeting the students, and seeing the work we do every day. That sends a powerful message."
Jennifer Zuvic, the Vice-Principal of BCSD's elementary site, said it was especially significant for the students.
"Recognition of the Deaf community is essential, and having the Minister attend in person is a significant honour. It sends a powerful message that our presence matters and that we are truly seen."
The BC Government has proclaimed that the annual International Week of Deaf People will take place this year from September 22 to 28, with the International Day of Sign Languages on September 23. Several activities are planned during the week at both BCSD sites.
There are approximately 90 elementary and secondary students - many of whom come from across the province to learn at BCSD, which shares sites with South Slope Elementary and Burnaby South Secondary.
POPDHH serves children and youth who attend school in their home district. There are more than 1400 Deaf and Hard of Hearing students throughout BC.
