Fifty years of faith, friendship and cherished memories were celebrated on October 15 as the St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Elementary School community gathered at Regina Mundi Parish for a special anniversary Mass marking five decades of Catholic education.

Held on the feast day of St. Teresa of Avila, the celebration brought together current and former students, staff, families, past principals and special guests to give thanks for the people, traditions and shared experiences that have shaped the school since 1976.
Celebrated by Father Kevin D'Souza, the Mass offered an opportunity to give thanks for the school's past while looking with hope toward its future. In his homily, Father Kevin reminded students that none of us is perfect, but each new day brings an opportunity to leave yesterday's worries and mistakes behind, begin again and strive to become better versions of ourselves. He encouraged students to allow the Holy Spirit to guide them along the way.
The school choir, under the direction of Mr. D'Alves and Ms. Byrne, shared their gift of music, while current and former students offered the Prayers of the Faithful.
In welcoming those gathered, Principal Charlie Agro expressed his gratitude to the former principals, educators, alumni and community members who returned to celebrate the milestone, along with the students, staff and families who are part of the school's story today.
As the celebration drew to a close, Mr. Agro invited students to reflect on what they could see, hear and feel, from the familiar faces of friends and teachers to the memories, traditions and prayers that have shaped the school community.
"You hear stories from the past. You hear laughter in our hallways and prayers in our classrooms. You hear messages about kindness, courage, and helping others," he said. "These are the values that have made our school special for generations."
Encouraging students to take pride in their school's history and feel thankful for those who helped build its community, Mr. Agro reminded them that they, too, have an important role in its future.
"Each one of us will help write the next chapters of our story," he said.
Inspired by St. Teresa of Avila, Mr. Agro encouraged the school community to continue living the values of truth, mindfulness, solidarity and love.
Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board Chairperson John Valvasori extended congratulations on behalf of the Board of Trustees and Chief Executive Officer (CEO)/Chief Education Officer (CEdO) David Hansen.
Reflecting on the school's history, Mr. Valvasori recognized the principals, teachers, parents, pastors, coaches and volunteers whose care and dedication have helped generations of students grow in faith and learning. Above all, he acknowledged the students who have contributed to the school's story over the past five decades.
The celebration also included the blessing of prayer banners and the school's 50th anniversary crest, generously donated by STA alumnus Mr. Mario Nesci. Mr. Agro expressed his gratitude to everyone who contributed to the anniversary celebrations, including the school's Anniversary Planning Committee, Catholic School Council, staff and volunteers.
Following Mass, guests gathered for a reception at the school to reconnect, share memories and celebrate the milestone.
As St. Teresa of Avila celebrates its golden anniversary, the milestone is a testament to the generations of educators and staff who have made the school much more than a place of learning. For 50 years, STA has been a place where children are known, cared for and encouraged to grow in faith, where friendships are formed and where a sense of belonging continues long after students have moved on.
And while the community reflected on its first 50 years, Mr. Agro concluded with a lighthearted invitation to return for the school's 100th anniversary on October 15, 2076.
