KING'S UNIVERSITY COLLEGE
King's History students receive $27,000 for transformative overseas learning experience

March 14, 2025

King's University College is proud to announce $27,000 in support for its World Wars in History, Memory and Reconciliation course, an unparalleled experiential learning opportunity that allows students to engage directly with the past. Thanks to the generosity of the Canadian Battlefields Foundation (CBF) and the Legion National Foundation (LNF), students will embark on a 12-day immersive journey through Belgium and France from May 1 to May 12, 2025. They will visit battlefields, cemeteries, and memorials that bring history to life, gaining a deeper understanding of the sacrifices and legacy of the World Wars.

Led by Dr. Graham Broad, Associate Professor and Department Chair of History, and Dr. Nic Virtue, Assistant Professor of History, the full course runs from January to May 2025. This program provides students with a unique opportunity to experience the "power of place" standing where history happened to develop a deeper, more personal understanding of the past. This year's trip holds particular significance, as students will be overseas on May 8, 2025 the 80th anniversary of VE Day, marking the end of World War II in Europe.

"The generous support from the Canadian Battlefields Foundation and the Legion National Foundation ensures students gain a perspective that textbooks alone cannot offer," said Dr. Broad. "Standing where history happened creates an understanding and connection that will stay with them for a lifetime."

This is the second time King's has offered this course, following a successful inaugural trip in 2022 that had a lasting impact on students and faculty alike. Avery Campbell, BA '22, reflected on the experience:

"Everything changes when you're standing here and seeing things in front of you. You can picture what those on the front lines of war were seeing because you're seeing it too. It's extremely impactful and powerful."

A video capturing reflections from students who took part in the 2022 trip highlights just how transformative this experience is. Hear directly from past participants as they share how the journey deepened their understanding of history and reshaped their perspectives. Watch the video to see their experience firsthand.

This program is made possible through the dedication of organizations committed to remembrance and education:
