The Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association welcomes the education-related investments announced in April 9's Provincial Budget and is encouraged to see increased recognition of the pressing needs within the K-12 public education system. These measures are a step in the right direction, and the Association is encouraging the government to commit to sustained support for students and educators.
"We are pleased to see an increase in the Teaching Services budget and the resulting growth in teacher and TLA allocations, as well as much needed new funding for technology in schools included in this year's budget it's a positive sign that the voices of teachers are being heard," said Trent Langdon, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association. "Teachers continue to face significant challenges, violence and aggression at work, and are dealing with increasingly complex classroom needs with limited resources. We hope that today's Budget announcements signal the beginning of a much needed long-term and comprehensive strategy that meaningfully addresses these realities."
The NLTA has consistently put forward constructive, evidence-based recommendations to improve teaching and learning conditions, and will continue to do so. The Association remains hopeful that the final report of the Education Accord NL will include recommendations that support continued investment towards a stronger, better resourced public K-12 education system that can be responsive to all students' needs. The NLTA understands the fiscal constraints facing the province, but emphasizes that continued investment in public education is not optional, it's essential. The Association continues to analyze the Budget announcements and will be seeking clarification of details as necessary.
"Education is a cornerstone of healthy communities and economic stability. By investing in our schools, we're investing in the future of Newfoundland and Labrador," Langdon added. "Teachers remain committed partners in this work. They deserve a system that supports their efforts to meet the needs of their students because the working conditions for teachers are the learning conditions for students." The NLTA remains committed to working with all partners to ensure the public education system in Newfoundland and Labrador receives the attention and investment it needs.
