Over the past two years, almost 100 women have had the opportunity to pursue successful careers in trades thanks to expanded support for BCIT's Trades Discovery for Women program. To help break down gender barriers and address BC's growing skilled labour shortage, Coast Capital has made a significant gift of $300,000 to increase capacity, enhance the program, and provide essential resources for women.
On April 4, Coast Capital and BCIT unveiled a plaque celebrating their exceptional partnership. Coast Capital has been a vital partner of BCIT since 2011, supporting innovative programs that make a meaningful impact on students' lives. Their commitment to education and community development is further exemplified by this recent investment, which aligns with their social purpose of "Building Better Futures Together." Since 2000, they have invested over $100 million into communities in BC, creating opportunities for those in need and championing inclusivity and empowerment.
The Trades Discovery for Women program has been training skilled tradeswomen since 1996 and offers a holistic approach to education. Participants receive hands-on technical training alongside valuable life and employability skills, work experience, and policy studies. With the expansion of the program, BCIT is able to support more women and diversify the workforce, ensuring a more inclusive and innovative trades sector.
The funding also allows BCIT to offer Mental Health First Aid certification to all participants, providing them with tools to support their colleagues through mental health challenges. Additionally, it funded a new "Student Navigator" position, helping students with application processes, funding, and connecting to support programs to ensure their success.
With over one million job vacancies projected in BC over the next decade, 80% of which require skills training, the Trades Discovery for Women program is helping to fill this gap by preparing women to take on these vital roles. With Coast Capital's contribution, they are helping BCIT shape the future of trades education and strengthening BC's economy.
BCIT is grateful for Coast Capital's ongoing partnership and support, which ensures that women in the trades receive the tools, resources, and confidence needed to succeed in a thriving industry.
