The MSVU community marked Earth Day a little early this year. On the Thursday before the Easter long weekend, dozens of staff, faculty and students spread out across campus to undertake environmental projects.
Volunteers collected garbage and leaves, filling 88 bags (an impressive increase of 30 bags over last year). Others helped relocate community garden plants that will have an alternate temporary home for the coming growing season.
"This event is a breath of fresh air in every way," said lead organizer Cheryl Delorey, Capital Projects Assistant. "It brings our MSVU community together with a focus on sustainability. It's one of my favourite events of the year."
The event also included a number of exhibitors and vendors, as well as lunch for those who gave of their time and effort. Special thanks to participating vendors and exhibitors: HRM Wasteless, Efficiency Nova Scotia / Green Schools, Think Well Shift, Lakeland Plant World, and Westfor for the donation of red spruce seedlings.
At MSVU's 2025 Earth Day celebration, Tom Strapps, Director of Facilities Management, announced the official launch of the MSVU E-Bike Rental Program. Electric bikes can now be rented by members of the MSVU community.
Electric bikes are pedal-style bikes with an electric motor attached to help power riders. Pedaling is still required, but the rider can determine how much of a boost from the motor they want as they pedal. The MSVU campus is well-known for its many steep hills. The electric aspect of the bikes will help propel riders up campus hills with ease and offer an eco-friendly transportation option.
Tom also took to the podium to award a number of prizes to attendees. He remarked that it's impressive to see so much change on campus in one event. "Thanks to the Earth Day Committee for organizing such a great day," he said. "It's wonderful to see the MSVU community gather together to care for our campus, and contribute to a more sustainable future. Let's keep the momentum going."
