In honour of Earth Day, Nipissing University faculty and staff stepped outside on April 22 to roll up their sleeves and give back to the environment during the Clean Up, Green Up, Together for a Better Campus event. With support from Clean, Green, Beautiful North Bay (CGB), the afternoon event brought together employees from across campus to help tidy and beautify Nipissing's outdoor spaces.
Volunteers donned gloves, grabbed garbage bags, and worked in teams to remove litter from the grounds while enjoying the fresh air. Following the clean-up, participants gathered in the small cafeteria for light refreshments and conversation, celebrating a shared commitment to sustainability and community spirit.
Michelle Banks, Health & Wellness Manager of Human Resources, spearheaded the employee event and was thrilled with the turnout.
"It was wonderful to see so many colleagues come together in support of a cleaner campus," said Banks. "Not only did we make a difference for the environment, but we also had the chance to connect with one another and get active outdoors."
High attendance and a collective of positive attitudes from attendees marked a successful experience, inspired by CGB North Bay, an organization dedicated to environmental stewardship and civic pride. CGB North Bay is a community-driven program dedicated to enhancing the beauty and sustainability of our city. They inspire collaboration and volunteerism to create cleaner, greener spaces that enrich the lives of North Bay residents and visitors alike.
"We're always excited to partner with community-minded organizations like Nipissing University," said Hariett Madigan, CGB North Bay Co-Chair. "This kind of local initiative shows how small efforts, when done together, can have a big impact."
CGB North Bay hosts city-wide cleanups twice a year and organizes regular litter pickup crews to help keep our community clean and vibrant. Volunteers are always welcome. North Bay residents can join the effort at any time of the year by signing up and ordering biodegradable garbage bags here.
Thank you to all staff and faculty members who participated in making this year's Earth Day initiative such a success.
