In an increasingly disposable society, sixteen Camosun Fine Furniture students defy the status quo by presenting their original chairs made from locally salvaged wood. The public show, "Against the Grain: An Exhibition of Handcrafted Chairs" opens with a gala event from 7 to 9pm on Wednesday, June 24 at the Arts Centre at Cedar Hill. There will be presentations and awards, with snacks provided. The event is free admission. The exhibition runs until July 19.

Against the Grain: An Exhibition of Handcrafted Chairs
"The students have been learning and honing their skills in joinery, design and furniture making over the 10-month program, all of which has culminated in this showcase of unique seating designs," explains Sandra Carr, program leader and instructor in Fine Furniture. "It's a great showcase of the students' work, with a focus and emphasis on human craftwork in an increasingly automated and programmed world."
This year, students have designed unique chairs out of reclaimed Garry Oak, Maple, and Horse Chestnut wood supplied by the Vancouver Island Woodworkers' Guild wood recovery program. The guild has been a steadfast supporter of the Fine Furniture program since its inception. The chairs will be judged by an industry panel, with the opportunity for visitors to vote for their favourite.
"Our class has been exploring themes beyond furniture construction. Against the Grain represents counterculture, a resistance to artificial intelligence replacing artists and the divisiveness in our world right now," says graduating student Erin O'Neill. "We want to spark dialogue and raise awareness of the current geopolitical landscape affecting our industry while showcasing that young people care about this tradition. We want to preserve fine craft."
Along with the students' capstone chairs, the exhibition will feature other selected works from the students including personal projects and others.
The gallery is open to the public at the Arts Centre at Cedar Hill, which is located at 3220 Cedar Hill Road. Hours vary so be sure to check the website before going.
