John Abbott College welcomed Dr. Benoit-Antoine Bacon, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of British Columbia, for a special address marking the College's official signing of the Okanagan Charter and its entry into the Canadian Health Promoting Campuses Network.
Held before a packed Agora, Dr. Bacon addressed mental health as a shared human experience, emphasizing that our emotional challenges and transitions throughout life connect us. He encouraged openness and dialogue around personal struggles, noting that reducing stigma begins when individuals feel safe to speak honestly about their experiences.
A central moment of the address was Dr. Bacon's reflection on his own life journey. He spoke about the importance of talking about mental health openly, and in so doing, spoke candidly about his early childhood experiences, including his subsequent struggles with depression, and periods of substance use. Dr. Bacon proudly shared his journey of healing, through key life events that helped him to confront and reframe his early experiences (e.g. becoming a father) and the value of seeking out mental health support, noting that his only regret was not pursuing therapy sooner.
Dr. Bacon highlighted a key message that resonated throughout the talk: behavior that appears confrontational or withdrawn is often rooted in inner distress, and compassion and understanding are essential to healing. He emphasized that mental health challenges are part of being human, and that asking for help is a mark of resilience and strength.
He reflected on the role of education in his own development, describing how his studies in neuropsychology provided tools for self-understanding and purpose. His academic path from student to professor, administrator, and university president illustrated how education can support both personal growth and public service.
The discussion continued during a well-attended question-and-answer session, where audience members explored practical ways in which institutions can strengthen mental health support. Dr. Bacon highlighted that the well-being of students, educators, and staff is interconnected, noting that today's campus communities play a formative role in shaping future leaders, families, and society.
The event reinforced the importance of John Abbott College's commitment to health promotion through the Okanagan Charter, which calls on post-secondary institutions to embed well-being into all aspects of campus culture. By joining the Charter, the College affirmed its role in advancing a coordinated, community-wide approach to mental health and well-being.
Attendees expressed strong appreciation for Dr. Bacon's openness, insights, and willingness to engage directly with the community. John Abbott College extends its sincere thanks to Dr. Bacon for his visit to Montreal, his authenticity, and his contributions to mental health, and looks forward to opportunities for future collaboration.
