CALGARY BOARD OF EDUCATION
Statement on provincial announcement about library resources

May 28, 2025

Trustees of Edmonton Public Schools and Calgary Board of Education are deeply concerned by the provincial government's news release today regarding library resources in Alberta schools.

This announcement has come as a complete surprise to both our boards.

To date, the Ministry of Education has not raised any concerns with either the Calgary Board of Education or Edmonton Public Schools regarding library resources.

Both our divisions follow established, rigorous processes to ensure that library resources are age-appropriate and relevant for students. Both divisions have clear mechanisms in place for any member of the school community to bring forward concerns about specific resources.

Both divisions' practices are guided by principles such as those outlined in the Foundations for School Library Learning Commons in Canada: A Framework for Success (Canadian School Libraries, 2023). We recognize that coming-of-age books, often available for students to choose independently, have historically been topics of discussion.

We value a collaborative relationship with the government, because it is essential for pursuing common goals and providing the best possible educational experience for all students in Alberta.

This unilateral announcement undermines the spirit of partnership we expect.

We remain committed to ensuring students have access to library resources that support their learning and development, while upholding community values and established protocols.
