Brock University has updated its Respectful Work and Learning Environment Policy to strengthen the institution's commitment to addressing discrimination and harassment within the campus community.
Now titled the Discrimination and Harassment Policy, the revised document reflects a renewed focus on upholding the legal rights of Brock community members and combatting discrimination and harassment in accordance with the University's legal obligations.
Other updates to the policy include:
- Broadened accountabilities: Addressing discrimination and harassment is now a shared responsibility beyond the Human Rights and Equity (HRE) Office to include the Office of People and Culture, Student Affairs, and Campus Safety Services, enabling HRE to refocus efforts on human rights education, advice and informal resolution.
- Clarified purpose: The policy's purpose and scope has been clarified to centre on discrimination and harassment. Concerns not meeting this threshold, such as those regarding respect or workplace management, are referred to appropriate channels such as the Student Code of Conduct or People and Culture.
- Compliance: Revisions ensure compliance with the Ministry of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security directive on anti-hate and anti-racism.
- More pathways for resolution: Disclosures and complaints of discrimination or harassment may still be received by the Human Rights and Equity Office, but individuals now have the option to disclose or consult through additional offices such as People and Culture, Student Affairs or Campus Safety Services for guidance and support.
The new policy underscores Brock's commitment to fostering a campus environment where equity, respect and inclusion are upheld for everyone.
