Senior Manufacturing students at Bishop Ryan Catholic Secondary School were able to gain valuable first-hand experience learning the basics of welding at Mohawk Stoney Creek Campus.
Under the guidance of teacher Michael Guglielmo, this semester students learned how to join and sever metals. They also explored how to make metal parts used in construction, in manufacturing, for tools, and for equipment. They were even able to weld and create a freestyle project of their choice.
Watch this classroom come to life in this video clip made by grade 11 student Jack Crossman in his welding booth.
The Mohawk Welding Bridge program offers secondary school students the opportunity to earn up to two credits towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) while earning two college credits towards the completion of a college program.
Students interested in Welding can also learn about incredible opportunities available through the HWCDSB Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP). Welding Level 1 Apprenticeship program is being offered next semester. OYAP is a School to Work program that opens the door for students to explore and work in apprenticeship occupations starting in Grade 11 or Grade 12 through the Cooperative Education program. Students have an opportunity to become registered apprentices and work towards becoming certified journeypersons in a skilled trade while completing their secondary school diplomas.
