Seventeen participants attended a recent tutoring workshop about trauma and resilience hosted by Aurora College's Literacy Outreach Centre and United for Literacy.
The workshop provided attendees with tools to understand and support learners who have experienced trauma. Research has shown that trauma can negatively impact a person's brain, body, emotions and how they learn. The legacy of residential schools has created intergenerational trauma that impacts many northern residents.
Workshop participant Norman Yakeleya shared his personal experience with intergenerational trauma and how it impacted him both in residential school and later in life.
Thirteen workshop participants from diverse educational, career and life experience backgrounds were joined by four Literacy Outreach staff.
