GROUND-BREAKING PARTNERSHIP FOR INNOVATIVE PROGRAM
Northlands College Partners with University of Saskatchewan to Launch a Master of Sustainability in Energy Security

May 24, 2024

Northlands College is proud to announce a ground-breaking partnership with the University of Saskatchewan to support enrolment of northern and Indigenous learners in the USask Master of Sustainability (MSs) in Energy Security program. This innovative program aims to equip learners across Northern Saskatchewan with the skills and knowledge necessary to lead renewable energy projects that maximize social and economic benefits for local communities.

The MSs in Energy Security is designed to prepare graduates for a variety of in-demand roles, including community energy planners and champions in First Nation, Métis, and Northern communities, project leaders and community coordinators in energy utilities and consulting firms, and policy and program officers in Indigenous, provincial, and federal governments. The program also opens doors for entrepreneurial opportunities in renewable energy project development, empowering graduates to lead the renewable energy transition in Northern, remote, and Indigenous communities in Canada and globally.

A key feature of the MSs in Energy Security is its flexible delivery model, offering both online and in-person learning options. This approach caters to working professionals and those with families, ensuring that learners can balance their studies with their personal and professional responsibilities.

Karsten Henriksen, President & CEO of Northlands College, emphasized the significance of this new program for the institution and the region:

"Northlands College continues to make alliances to provide educational opportunities to Northern residents so they can integrate with the career prospects of today's requirements. Sustainable living and energy is a key area of discussion of this century, and as the world faces global warming and resource challenges, our learners must have the education and expertise to contribute to these industries and be integral parts of the process. For Northlands College, this would be a unique addition, to provide an advanced learning opportunity to its learners as it would be one of the first Masters Degrees we have planned for Northern learners, highlighting our commitment to quality education and career paths."

This partnership represents a significant milestone for Northlands College, reflecting its dedication to support the provision of accessible, high-quality education that meets the evolving needs of Northern communities. By supporting the offering of the the MSs in Energy Security, Northlands College is poised to be seen as a leader in promoting sustainability education, fostering a new generation of experts who will drive the transition to renewable energy and sustainable living.
