Algoma University's Board of Governors is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Sheila Embleton as Interim President and Vice-Chancellor, effective July 1, 2025. Dr. Embleton, a leader with a wealth of experience in Canadian higher education, was selected after a rigorous and thorough selection process. Her proven leadership and extensive experience make her a strong choice for this pivotal time at Algoma University.

Dr. Embleton is a highly respected academic leader with a distinguished career in Canadian higher education. Her extensive experience in university governance, administration, and public service makes her a strong choice for this pivotal time at Algoma University. Her appointment comes as we continue to advance our Special Mission, expand our institutional footprint, and strengthen our commitment to cross-cultural learning, equity, and student success.
Throughout her career, Dr. Embleton has demonstrated unwavering dedication to collegial governance, academic excellence, and inclusive leadership. Her deep experience in supporting Indigenous initiatives, track record of engaging meaningfully with faculty, staff, students, and community partners, and strategic mindset make her the Board's confident choice to guide the institution through this period of transition and renewal.
Most recently, Dr. Embleton served as Interim President and Vice-Chancellor at Laurentian University, where she provided principled and steady leadership during a time of significant institutional rebuilding. Her efforts helped restore operational stability and renew trust across the Laurentian community, setting a positive precedent for her role at Algoma University.
Dr. Embleton holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Toronto and is Professor Emerita at York University, where she served in numerous senior leadership roles, including Vice-President Academic and Provost. She is a Distinguished Research Professor Emerita, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, President of the RSC Academy of the Arts and Humanities, and has served on numerous national and international boards. She has earned recognition for her leadership in internationalization, gender equity, and Indigenous engagement.
As Interim President, Dr. Embleton will work closely with the Board of Governors, Senate, executive leadership, and valued partners across our Sault Ste. Marie, Brampton, and Timmins campuses. We value your input and collaboration in this transition, and Dr. Embleton is committed to ensuring continuity in key priorities with your support. This includes sustaining momentum in areas such as academic quality, student engagement, operational excellence, and Truth and Reconciliation.
