Bringing the Classroom to the Community and the Community to the Classroom

In an innovative initiative aimed at bridging theory with practice, students from the Diploma in Law Enforcement Studies (LESD) program at the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) took their learning beyond the classroom and into the heart of the local community. A few weeks ago, 60 students embarked on a Community Engagement Project as part of the LAWS-2207 Young Offenders in Canada course.

The project involved students immersing themselves in the community, collaborating with various youth service organizations to gain firsthand insight into the experiences of young individuals within the criminal justice system. Through meetings with organizations such as CFSEU's End Gang Life Unit, BC Youth Custody Services, and Youth Probation, students delved into topics ranging from supporting at-risk youth to understanding restorative justice practices. This experience provided students with invaluable exposure to real-world scenarios, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to make a positive impact in their future careers.

Following their community engagements, students compiled their reflections into comprehensive papers, elucidating their key learnings and insights. These papers were scheduled to be presented on March 26, April 2, and April 4, 2024, at JIBC, where community partners attended to witness the students' presentations firsthand.

"We truly are 'bringing the classroom to the community and then bringing the community to the classroom," expressed Melanie Chernoff, emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between academic learning and community engagement.

The integration of practical experiences into the curriculum not only enriched students' educational journey but also fostered meaningful connections between JIBC and the local community. Through initiatives like the Community Engagement Project, JIBC continued to uphold its commitment to preparing students for real-world challenges while fostering community partnerships that drive positive change.
