Northlands College is excited to announce its Cultural Days celebration, set to take place on September 24-25 in La Ronge. This event offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich history and traditions of Indigenous cultures in Northern Saskatchewan. Attendees are encouraged to come with an open mind and leave inspired and rebalanced by the diverse cultural experiences on offer.
The Cultural Days celebration will feature a range of meaningful activities that honor and preserve Indigenous traditions. Participants can look forward to engaging in moose-hide preparation, round dances, smudge ceremonies, and pipe ceremonies. There will also be special guest speakers, traditional food, children's activities, and paddle-making sessions. These activities are designed to connect participants with the deep cultural roots of the region, offering a unique chance to experience and learn about Indigenous ways of life.
A highlight of this year's Cultural Days will be the honor of hosting Tomson Highway, OC, a renowned playwright, novelist, pianist, and songwriter. Highway is one of Canada's most influential Indigenous writers, whose works explore critical issues affecting First Nations people, including residential schools, reserve life, and Indigenous identity. During his visit to La Ronge, Highway will share an evening with residents, offering profound insights into his life and experiences, and providing a remarkable opportunity for learning and reflection.
Commenting on the event, Karsten Henriksen, President & CEO of Northlands College, said, "The Cultural Days celebration is a vital occasion for us to honor and celebrate the Indigenous history and culture that enriches Northern Saskatchewan. This event is not only a celebration of our heritage but also a powerful way to promote inclusivity and diversity among the many cultures that call our region home. We are especially pleased to host Tomson Highway, a Canadian legend, whose presence is a true honor for our community. His wisdom and experiences are invaluable, and we are grateful for the opportunity to learn from him."
Tickets for the evening with Tomson Highway will be available at the Canoe Campus in La Ronge, SK. Tickets can be purchased with a donation of non - perishable food to the Northlands College Food Bank, ensuring that the spirit of community and giving continues throughout the event.
