September 24, 2024

In a demonstration of their continued commitment to empowering students and driving innovation, Nokia Canada has donated over $530,000 in carrier-grade equipment to Algonquin College's Computer Systems Technology and Networking programs. This generous gift is the latest in a long-standing partnership that exemplifies the power of collaboration between academia and industry, ensuring that students are prepared to make an impact in their fields from day one.

"This donation is a transformative gift that elevates the student learning experience by providing hands-on training with the very technology they will encounter in their future careers," said Mark Savenkoff, Vice President of Advancement and Strategy at Algonquin College. "We are incredibly grateful to Nokia for their continued support, which not only enhances our programs but also strengthens the industry ecosystem that benefits both our students and corporate partners alike."

As part of Nokia's multi-faceted partnership with Algonquin College, this latest equipment donation builds on their efforts to support co-op placements, corporate training, and program development. With 46 co-op work terms offered last year alone, Nokia has become a top employer for Algonquin College students, transitioning many from internships to full-time roles. Additionally, through their contributions to Program Advisory Committees and ongoing curriculum collaborations, Nokia helps shape the next generation of industry professionals.

"The partnership between Nokia and Algonquin College is a great example of how industry and academia can work together to build strong, dynamic partnerships," said Charles Nixon, Lead Technologist at Algonquin College. "With this equipment, students no longer need to rely on simulations they're working with the same cutting-edge technology used in the field, giving them the highest level of hands-on experience. This will prepare them to be impactful right from the start of their careers."

Linda Krebs, Head of Talent Attraction, Corporate Functions and Strategy and Technology at Nokia Canada, emphasized the importance of these kinds of contributions in fostering innovation. "Contributions like this one are a crucial part of building industry and educational partnerships that drive innovation and have a lasting impact," said Krebs. "By supporting curriculum development and enhancing student learning environments, we're not only investing in the next generation of tech leaders but also creating a sustainable pipeline of talent that benefits both the students and the industry at large."

Nokia's engagement extends far beyond the classroom, as evidenced by their involvement in initiatives like DARE6, which promotes Truth and Reconciliation through Indigenous governance principles and innovation. Their contributions underscore the value of partnerships that not only enhance educational outcomes but also contribute to broader societal goals.

As Nokia and Algonquin College continue to collaborate, this latest donation represents the next chapter in a partnership that has consistently driven mutual success. Together, they are building a thriving industry ecosystem, one that transforms hopes and dreams into lifelong success while fueling innovation in Canada's tech landscape.
