GEORGE BROWN COLLEGE
George Brown College hosts Toronto youth for BOLT Day of Discovery

October 18, 2024

George Brown College (GBC) proudly opened its doors to the next generation of construction industry leaders on Thursday, October 10, 2024, for the annual Building Opportunities for Life Today (BOLT) Day of Discovery.

Held at GBC's Centre for Construction and Engineering Technologies (CCET), this collaborative initiative brought together GBC, the BOLT Foundation, and Tridel to inspire and inform aspiring young tradespeople from across Toronto.

The event kicked off with a welcome from industry leaders and educators, including Norbert Costa, Executive Director of the BOLT Foundation; Billy Pang, Member of Provincial for Parliament Markham-Unionville and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Education; and Dr. Adel Esayed, Dean of GBC's Centre for Construction and Engineering Technologies. Each speaker offered invaluable insights and words of encouragement, inspiring attendees to engage and set the tone for the day ahead.

Ontario Minister of Education Jill Dunlop expressed the importance of events like the Day of Discovery.

"By illuminating different career pathways, students become aware of the many ways to build a fulfilling life," she said. "As someone who has personally seen the value of the skilled trades in my own family, I know these opportunities open doors and offer insights towards an outstanding future."

Empowering youth and building futures

Participants got a glimpse into the dynamic world of skilled trades and had the chance to explore the breadth of career opportunities available in the growing construction sector. They explored GBC labs and workshops, with facilitated tours through the plumbing, carpentry, and millwright facilities, offering an inside look into the learning environments.

This was followed by an exclusive site visit to one of Tridel's sites, the MRKT project in downtown Toronto, offering a real-world visit to a construction site. By providing both on-campus and on-site activities, the event offered a comprehensive view of the construction sector, helping participants envision their potential future careers.

GBC and BOLT: A partnership driving student success

Since its inception in 2009, the collaboration has achieved remarkable outcomes. With over 250 students benefiting from the scholarships at GBC alone, the BOLT Charitable Foundation Entrance Awards have created vital pathways for students to succeed. Combined with GBC's industry-aligned programs and facilities, it provides students with a solid foundation for successful careers in the construction sector.

"This presents an opportunity for young people to step into rewarding roles that will build the future of our province," said Pang. "The BOLT Charitable Foundation Awards are an excellent example of how we can empower students to explore this opportunity by providing scholarships, mentorship, and hands-on experiences."

Shaping the future of construction

The Day of Discovery is a testament to the ongoing efforts to address the growing skills gap in the construction sector. GBC, BOLT, and their industry partners are working to build a stronger, more inclusive future for the construction industry by connecting passionate young individuals with the tools, knowledge, and opportunities they need to succeed.

Esayed reflected on the event's significance: "Events like the BOLT Day of Discovery showcase our commitment to practical, career-focused education that connects our students with industry. They are essential in preparing the next generation of skilled tradespeople for successful careers in construction."

The continued partnership shows an ongoing commitment to shaping the construction industry's future. By combining academic excellence with industry insights, GBC continues to position itself as a launchpad for aspiring tradespeople and their success in the field.
