CONESTOGA COLLEGE
New degree program prepares data analysts for rapidly changing digital world

February 25, 2025

A new three-year degree program launching at Conestoga this fall will address the need for skilled data analysts to thrive in various industries including finance, marketing, healthcare, entertainment and public service. The Bachelor of Data Analytics (BDA) will be offered through the School of Applied Computer Science & Information Technology, and includes a paid co-op work term to build practical skills and foster connections with employers.

"Data is ubiquitous in today's labour market, and there is currently no three-year degree in the province that focuses on preparing students to enter the workforce with fundamental skills in acquiring, managing, analyzing data and communicating results to help governments and businesses make better decisions faster and more accurately," said Jim Edwards, dean, School of Applied Computer Science & Information Technology.

"This three-year offering is an opportunity for students to learn exciting new skills that will propel them to the data workforce quickly."

The program includes courses in machine learning, neural networks and model engineering -- fundamental building blocks for a future economy that will soon be dominated by AI, while also stressing key business strategies, professional communications and an understanding of data ethics and privacy.

"The BDA will go beyond lectures to bring technology and fundamental concepts to life, providing practical experience with real-world examples. This includes everything from interpreting spreadsheets with computer algorithms to working with huge datasets on cloud servers. The program also focuses on data problems related to actual industry needs, helping to prepare students for the paid co-op term and the opportunity to solidify their newly found knowledge and skills in an industry environment," added Leigh Willis, chair, School of Applied Computer Science & Information Technology.

The program will be delivered in-person at the college's Waterloo campus, strategically located within one of the fastest-growing tech sectors in North America. Applications for the fall 2025 term are open, and there will be an information session on Saturday, March 1, at 1:15 pm specifically for the Bachelor of Data Analytics program as part of the college's spring open house activities.
