A pair of students in the Social Service Worker - Gerontology program at St. Clair College are getting rave reviews from residents at a local retirement home for their unique cultural contributions.

"The Mandeeps," two students in the program, both named Mandeep Kaur, were placed at Devonshire Retirement Residence as part of their studies.

The students, who hail from India, put together a day of cultural events at the residence, sharing the rich traditions from their home country.

"Mandeep and Mandeep worked very hard to create a special experience for the residents, taking the time and care to share in their cultural traditions with others," said Alexandra Frabotta, the program coordinator for Social Service Worker - Gerontology program. "We are so proud of their dedication and delighted to showcase their work."

"Sharing in culture and fostering connection is a cornerstone of the field of Social Service Work," Frabotta added.

The Mandeeps built a stunning diorama of their country, showcasing traditional outfits along with the heritage of India. The pair also performed a vibrant and graceful dance, even inviting residents to join in. Residents were happy to learn more about the Indian culture as the Mandeeps took them on a figurative and memorable journey to their homeland.

"Participating in the cultural event was such a special experience! I wore a traditional Punjabi Indian suit and shared its cultural significance with the residents," said the first Mandeep Kaur. "They loved learning about the vibrant colours and beautiful embroidery, and it sparked great conversations about Indian traditions and festivals."

The second Mandeep Kaur said it was a pleasure to pass along traditions, open minds and increase understanding of different cultures.

"The cultural presentation was very interesting because I shared insights into the significant traditions of my country, including history, food, dress, crops, and festivals," Kaur said. "Residents showed a lot of curiosity and interest to learn about our culture."

During the presentation, Kaur wore her own cultural dress as a new bride, which was a big hit among residents.

"It was very wonderful moment and time which gave me long-lasting memories with residents and staff members," Kaur said.

Students in the program regularly find employment after their placements, making it a great career launchpad.

Students in placement this semester have been hired at several local agencies, including Banwell Gardens Long-Term Care Home, Harmony in Action and Aspen Lake (Schlegel Village).
