LAKELAND COLLEGE
Students shine at provincial skills competition

May 14, 2025

Eleven Lakeland College students showcased exceptional skill and determination at the 2025 Skills Canada Alberta Provincial Competition, winning several medals in three distinct categories.

Among the competition's top performers were Logan Peters and Braden Kereliuk, who earned gold medals in carpentry and steamfitter-pipefitter, respectively, at the competition held May 6-8 in Edmonton. With these wins, both students have secured spots on Team Alberta and will represent the province at the upcoming Skills Canada National Competition in Regina, taking place May 28-31.

Also excelling in their categories were Lexi Lundquist, who earned a silver medal in hairstyling, and Mila Jubinville-Morin, who placed fourth in the same category and received a safety award. These recognitions reflect not only the students' dedication to their skill, but also the quality and impact of Lakeland's commitment to experiential learning and career-ready training.

"All of our students represented Lakeland College with professionalism and skill a testament to the quality of our programs and the dedication of our instructors in the Schools of Trades and Health and Wellness. We are incredibly proud of them," said Dave King, dean of the School of Trades and Technology. "Their participation not only enhances their resumes but also prepares them for successful careers in the skilled trades. Congratulations to Logan, Braden, Lexi and Mila, and to all our competitors for a strong showing in Edmonton. Good luck to Braden and Logan in Regina."

Lakeland had competitors in eight categories at the provincial competition: automobile technology, carpentry, electrical installation, heavy vehicle technology, welding, steamfitter-pipefitter, aesthetics and hairstyling. Since 2007, Lakeland students have now won 37 Skills Canada Alberta Provincial Competition medals and three national medals.

Participation in Skills Canada events aligns closely with Lakeland's strategic goals, including enhancing student learning through applied, hands-on opportunities that mirror industry standards and expectations. Lakeland's apprenticeship programs include carpenter, automotive service technician, electrician, heavy equipment technician, parts technician, steamfitter-pipefitter and welder. Taught in Lakeland's spa and salon, the health and wellness programs offered include esthetician, hairstyling, health care aide, clinical esthetician and barber.
