ALGONQUIN COLLEGE
The Canerector Foundation Fuels Innovation for Algonquin College Learners by Expanding Welding Shop with a $315,000 Donation

June 11, 2025

This week is Innovation Week in Ottawa and Algonquin College is excited to announce a significant expansion of the Welding Shop in the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence (ACCE). Thanks to a $315,000 donation from the Canerector Foundation, the Welding Shop has integrated modern technologies that will help learners meet rising industry demands for highly skilled graduates.

The expansion of the Welding Shop will improve its layout, provide it with additional space and equip it with two new advanced tools: a robotic welder and a CNC plasma table. As students gain hands-on experience with these advanced tools, they will learn automation, software programming and precision metal cutting for fabrication projects, which will enhance their job readiness. These additions reflect industry trends and elevate the academic experience of apprentices and learners from various academic programs, equipping them with skills and knowledge they could not gain through manual training alone.

The Canerector Foundation's donation to the Welding Shop represents the organization's third major investment in the College. Since 2022, the Canerector Foundation has benefited hundreds of learners through the Canerector Foundation Scholarship and by supporting the establishment of a second Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Lab. This latest partnership with the Welding Shop brings the Canerector Foundation's total giving to Algonquin College to over $830,000.

"Skilled trades play a vital role in driving our economy forward," said Amanda Hawkins, CEO of Canerector and Director at the Foundation. "With demand across nearly every industry in Canada, we are proud to support education and training that equip students with the skills to build rewarding and essential careers."

This sentiment is echoed by Mark Savenkoff, Vice President, Advancement and Strategy at Algonquin College. "We are grateful to have found a partner in the Canerector Foundation. Like us, they know how important it is to empower learners through personalized and experiential learning that drives innovation. The impact of their partnership benefits not only the learners, but also faculty, employers, community members - everybody wins."
