Research projects involving precision ranching, cattle nutrition and livestock wellness will be on display at Lakeland College's Vermilion campus Oct. 30 during Research for the Ranch: Livestock Field Day.
The event is an opportunity for livestock producers, industry representatives, students and fellow researchers to learn about the valuable research being conducted by Lakeland's applied research team and the impact it will have on the future of agriculture.
"Our research team focuses on advancing real-world agricultural productivity and sustainability in the crop and livestock sectors," says Dr. Francois Paradis, dean of Applied Research at Lakeland. "Our projects are geared towards making a measurable impact on the daily lives and work of ag producers, and ensuring they have easy access to the information we gather is a critical part of that. That's what we do at our livestock field day. It's an opportunity for the ag community to learn about our latest findings, connect with our researchers, and share input on the opportunities and challenges they face. We invite everyone to attend to learn more about this important work."
Lakeland has three livestock researchers: Drs. Obioha Durunna, Susan Markus and Brenda Ralston. Durunna's work is in cattle nutrition, Ralston focuses on animal wellness and welfare topics and Markus has several projects involving precision ranching. Each of these researchers will share project results at Livestock Field Day.
Additional event highlights:
The event will showcase Lakeland's new cannulated Black Angus heifers, which were purchased from the University of Saskatchewan. Their role in ruminant research projects and college animal science technology courses will be highlighted.
Lakeland's applied research social media contact, Kyleigh Magotiaux, will lead participants through the process of effectively developing and telling a story using social media.
In the afternoon, the tables will be turned to get feedback from attendees to learn more about the opportunities and challenges they face and how Lakeland staff can support their goals.
Attending the event is free but advanced registration is requested. Check-in will begin on Oct. 30 at 8 a.m. at the Agriculture Technology Centre at the Vermilion campus. The program begins at 8:45 a.m. Check out lakelandcollege.ca/field-day for more information and to RSVP.
Lakeland hosted Alberta Crop Diagnostic Day in July, partnering with other organizations to showcase the latest insights and advances in crop management.
