This fall, Science Week at Vanier College is taking place from October 27-31. Hosted by the STEM Centre, this exciting week will feature a series of guest speakers sharing insights into their education, research, and current work across a variety of STEM fields.
On the schedule Monday, McGill researcher Arav Saherwala will present Finding plastics - a description of his work focusing on developing methods to detect plastic particles within organisms, understanding how far they travel in aquatic systems, and their toxicity to organisms.
Later that day, McGill University's Megan Ng (with Julia Forestell & Meghana Munipalle) will discuss "Neuroscience in 3D: Exploring the Brain Through Computational Modeling". Participants of this workshop will be immersed in the field of 3D modeling in neuroscience, through a hands-on coding activity where they will learn about why cell structure, organization matter and the digital tools that make it possible to study these questions.
Other presentations during the week will explore the pathways of various McGill researchers leading to their current research in biology and chemistry.
Then on Friday, Vanier Mathematics professor Ivan Ivanov will present "Games to Measure Intelligence" and explore the next frontier of intelligence: building systems that efficiently learn on the fly by creating internal "world models," much like a child exploring a new playground.
In addition to guest speakers, the week will also feature a special Coffeehouse event on Wednesday, October 29, where the Women of Science Bursary Awards will be distributed and talented students and staff will liven up the event with live musical performances.
