Following the Alberta Budget 2026 announcement, NAIT is excited to announce that the polytechnic has secured the funding to begin construction of the Advanced Skills Centre (ASC). This pivotal investment marks an important new chapter for the project, moving into a complex construction phase that requires robust leadership in infrastructure delivery, strategic capital planning, and collaboration with multiple public partners.

To meet these evolving needs, NAIT has realigned its Associate Vice President role, and is pleased to welcome Timothy (Tim) Cartmell as Associate Vice President, Major Capital Projects, effective March 9. Tim brings a wealth of experience in both municipal and provincial government, including eight years as an Edmonton city councillor, where he established a strong record in public service, growth planning, transportation strategy, public accountability, and stakeholder engagement.
A civil engineer by training, Tim holds a Master of Engineering in Engineering Management from the University of Alberta. His career includes leading major capital projects, managing large-scale modernization initiatives, and overseeing multi-site lodge construction programs. Tim's expertise encompasses not only delivering complex builds on time and within budget but also aligning capital planning with long-term institutional goals.
Tim previously served as Executive Director of Capital Planning and Spending for the Government of Alberta's Treasury Board, where he gained valuable insight into how capital priorities are evaluated, funded, and integrated into broader fiscal strategies. This experience will enhance NAIT's capacity to navigate funding landscapes and responsibly steward major investments. Tim is widely recognized for his steady leadership, analytical rigor, and collaborative approach.
NAIT invites the community to join in welcoming Tim Cartmell as he leads the Advanced Skills Centre into its next phase of development.
