DOUGLAS COLLEGE
Brian Mackay joins Douglas College from Thompson Rivers University

June 14, 2018

Brian Mackay has joined Douglas College as Associate Vice President of Technology and Chief Information Officer, bringing more than 19 years of experience as a visionary IT leader in the B.C. post-secondary system.

Mackay started his new role June 4. He spent the past 14 years at Thompson Rivers University as its Associate Vice President of Digital Strategies and CIO. He led the development of IT and digital strategy during a time of significant growth and change for TRU, and developed a world-class information security program while continually improving learning technologies, technology infrastructure and administrative systems and processes.

Douglas College wanted to hire someone who would not only fill the CIO role, but also that of Associate Vice President of Technology.

"We wanted someone with a track record of success in technology leadership in a complex environment who would be instrumental in developing and executing strategies to elevate the effectiveness of the College and all of its constituents. We believe we have found this with Brian," said Tracey Szirth, Vice President of Administrative Services and CFO.

Mackay said he is passionate about developing collaboration opportunities between B.C. institutions and partners through the effective use of technology.

"I am excited to be part of the Douglas College success story and look forward to building on the strong foundation [outgoing CIO] Ian McLeod and the Centre for Education and Information Technology team have established to enhance technology services for Douglas students and employees," said Mackay.

Mackay received his MBA in IT Management from Athabasca University and holds certifications in Project Management Professional, COBIT 5.0 and Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL). He served over 12 years on the BCNET board and was a board member for the Canadian University Council of Chief Information Officers. Prior to his time at TRU, Mackay led the IT teams at several organizations, including Open Learning Agency in Burnaby.
