College Research Activity Steady - Lambton College Heads National Ranking

Altogether, the Top 50 colleges reported completing a total of 2,309 research projects in Fiscal 2017, compared with 2,777 in Fiscal 2016, a decline of -16.9%. Colleges reported that 3,173 faculty, researchers and technicians were involved in research, compared with 2,396 in Fiscal 2016. In addition, the number of students paid to perform research rose to 2,653 in Fiscal 2017 from 2,130 the year before. Research income from industry sources rose to $42.8 million in Fiscal 2017 from $41.3 million the prior year.

"College research activity levels appear to be in a steady state," said Ron Freedman, CEO of Research Infosource. "We're still waiting to see a breakout from this important sector. Despite great potential, some key activity measures have not demonstrated strong growth."

Overall, year-over-year research income growth was strongest at NAIT - Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (up 90.7%), Cambrian College (up 73.5%), Camosun College (up 69.2%), College of the North Atlantic (up 63.8%) and Mohawk College (up 55.1%). Fourteen (14) Ontario colleges on the Top 50 list captured 36.7% of the national research income total, while 20 Quebec colleges captured 34.0% and 6 Alberta colleges accounted for 11.0%.

"Thirty-three of the Top 50 Research Colleges posted gains in research income in Fiscal 2017, which was most encouraging," said Mr. Freedman. As well, 27 colleges reported they had received an additional $61.7 million for research infrastructure funding through the federal government's Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund (PSI-SIF). Over time, these funds should result in increased research activity."
