Team Sudbury's skills among the best in Ontario Local students bring home gold, silver, and bronze

Members of Team Sudbury are returning home from Skills Ontario with lots of hardware and heads held high.

They won medals in nine categories at this week's Skills Ontario competition, including two gold, three silver, and four bronze. Skills Ontario is the largest event of its kind in Canada.

Team Sudbury is comprised of more than 50 students from Cambrian College, Rainbow District School Board, and Sudbury Catholic District School Board.

This is the second year in a row the three institutions have joined together to create Team Sudbury. Team Sudbury's debut last year produced four gold medals, two silver medals, and four bronze medals.

There were even repeat winners among Team Sudbury this week. Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School students Anton Niemi Fielding and Colin Therrien repeated as silver medalists in the category of silver medal in Horticulture and Landscape.

"This is a great result for our students," says Renee Scott, Cambrian College's Director of Student Success and Recruitment and the college's lead organizer for Team Ontario. "We have proved again this year that Sudbury produces highly skilled students who can compete with the best in the province."

"At Sudbury Catholic we promote innovation as a system and make it a priority to offer hands-on learning opportunities such as this one for students at each of our 4 secondary schools. Our students work year-round improving their skills and strengthening their abilities. Winners of a gold medal at Skills Ontario have qualified for the Skills Canada championships May 28-29 in Halifax.
