CICAN RELEASES A NEW WHITE PAPER
The role of colleges and institutes in Canada's resilient recovery

December 1, 2020

As the federal government prepares to launch its fall economic update, Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) has released a new white paper outlining the essential role that colleges, institutes, polytechnics and cegeps can play to support Canada's economic recovery.

Over 95% of Canadians live within 50km of a college or institute. With their extensive footprint, these institutions reach Canadians where they live, offering programs tailored to the needs of people, businesses and communities all across the country.

"Colleges and institutes are ideally placed to support Canadians and help their communities recover in the months ahead", noted CICan president and CEO, Denise Amyot. "Through their deep commitment to respond to the evolving innovation and skills development needs of local stakeholders and employers they are poised to support a strong and sustainable economic recovery."

In the face of an unprecedented global pandemic, Canada's resilient recovery will require a truly national effort. Colleges and institutes have a fundamental role to play nation-wide to ensure its success. They can help Canadians upskill and reskill to succeed in uncertain times and meet evolving labour requirements. Helping Canadian businesses, particularly SMEs, innovate and grow by leveraging the full potential of college and institute applied research capacity will also be critical as we look to rebuild a resilient, sustainable and green economy.
