A new scholarship in memory of George Springate will be awarded by the John Abbott College Foundation starting in June 2021.

A former City of Montreal police officer and Montreal Alouettes player on the 1970 Grey Cup champion team, George Springate co-founded the Police Technology program at John Abbott College in 1973. During his 33 years at the College, Mr. Springate was a highly respected law professor, mentor and friend to countless students and faculty.
A man of many talents, Mr. Springate was elected to the Québec National Assembly in 1970, serving three terms. A recipient of the Order of Canada in 1989, he was also at various times a sports commentator, a newspaper columnist and a superb charity event organizer and fundraiser, ending his career as Canada's Senior Citizenship Judge.
Accomplished and generous, George Springate was known for his kind disposition and boundless love of his country. He touched many lives with his friendship, community service and philanthropic work.
The George Springate Memorial Scholarship of $2,000 will be given annually to a third-year Police Technology student who best illustrates their kind, supportive and unselfish desire to help their fellow students in need, without any expectations in return.
