Confederation College Announces Richard Gemmill as New Vice President, Academic

Confederation College President Kathleen Lynch is pleased to announce that the College will welcome Richard Gemmill as its new Vice President, Academic effective July 26, 2021.

"Richard has been with Confederation College for almost nine years, starting as a contract faculty member in August 2012 before assuming progressively responsible administrative roles in the School of Business, Hospitality and Media Arts," said Lynch. "He has been the Dean of the School for the past five years, as well as a member of our Board of Governors for the past two years. Through his deep roots within our College community and his academic and industry experience, Richard has cultivated a strong understanding of the needs of students, industries and communities in northwestern Ontario. I am confident he will bring great vision to his new role and help Confederation College realize its strategic directions."

Gemmill is a graduate of both the college and university systems, having earned an Accounting Diploma from Fanshawe College, along with an Honours Degree in History, a Bachelor's Degree in Education and a Master's Degree in Business Administration, all from Lakehead University.

Prior to his career in education, Gemmill worked in the hospitality industry as a manager, both locally and in England, where he learned the importance of building relationships and partnerships with employees and clients. 

In relation to his announcement to the College community, Gemmill shared his excitement for his new role. "I am proud to accept this new responsibility to help lead Confederation College in its work to change lives through learning. I am grateful for all who have supported me during my time at Confederation. I look forward to advancing our academic division to provide relevant and industry-leading education in environments that support student success for our diverse range of learners."

Confederation College has been serving the citizens of northwestern Ontario since 1967 meeting the educational needs of students in a catchment area of some 550,000 square kilometres. Along with its main campus in Thunder Bay, Confederation College has seven regional sites located in Dryden, Fort Frances, Greenstone, Kenora, Marathon, Sioux Lookout and Red Lake, as well as a growing Distance Education division.
