FANSHAWE COLLEGE
College to offer free skills development program for health-care industry

October 4, 2021

Fanshawe's Corporate Training Solutions is launching a new skills development program for the health-care industry, geared toward unemployed or underemployed individuals.

Skills2Care will generate employment opportunities for Supportive Care Assistants with local organizations in Southwestern Ontario and is free for qualifying participants.

Supportive Care Assistants work with certified personal care providers and health care teams and perform non-clinical activities including assisting with meals, cleaning rooms and care areas and providing companionship, comfort and support.

There are three phases to the program. Phase one consists of four weeks of online training focusing on essential and technical workplace skills. During phase two, students will complete a four-week paid work placement in settings such as long-term care facilities, retirement communities and in-home care. Phase three of the program involves employment services specifically for the health-care industry.

"In the next 30 years, the number of Canadians over the age of 85 is expected to triple and the demand for health-care workers will increase," says Candace Miller, senior manager, Strategic Initiatives and Business Development. "Supportive Care Assistants play a vital role in health care. This program is a great opportunity to meet a growing need in our community."

The program is available free of charge to residents of Ontario who are 18 years of age or older and unemployed, precariously employed or employed with low household income. Indigenous peoples, newcomers, women, and youth are encouraged to apply.

Those interested in registering for the program should email cts@fanshawec.ca or call 1-844-CTS-FANS (1-844-287-3267) and reference the Skills2Care - Supportive Care Assistant program. This Employment Ontario program is funded in part by the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario.
