The Association pour la recherche au collégial (ARC), the Centre de documentation collégiale (CDC) and the Association québécoise de pédagogie collégiale (AQPC) are holding the 24th online session of the Avec un grand R series, on Monday, December 12, 2022, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The event will focus on factors affecting the oral scientific communication skills of college students in the Natural Sciences program.
From 2017 to 2020, the research team of Caroline Cormier, professor and researcher at Cégep André-Laurendeau, and Simon Langlois, professor and researcher at Cégep Marie-Victorin, co-led a project funded by the Ministère de l'Éducation et de l'Enseignement supérieur under the Programme d'aide à la recherche sur l'enseignement et l'apprentissage (PAREA). In particular, the team developed a new theoretical model of the perceptions and attitude toward oral scientific communication. The project is detailed in a report entitled Développement et évaluation de l'habileté en communication scientifique orale des étudiants préuniversitaires en Sciences de la nature [Development and assessment of oral scientific communication skills of pre-university Natural Sciences students], available on EDUQ.info: https://eduq.info/xmlui/handle/11515/37943. The findings will receive a critical review during the upcoming session, followed by a discussion with Caroline Cormier and Simon Langlois.
To prepare for the December 12 session, we highly recommend that participants read the article by Caroline Cormier and Simon Langlois in the Winter 2021 issue of Pédagogie collégiale titled: "De l'importance de la communication orale scientifique au collégial" [The importance of oral scientific communication at the college level]. The discussion will be launched at the outset of the event, since all participants will be expected to have read the article beforehand. The audience will be an integral part of the "conversation" about how to leverage the research findings being examined. The discussion with resource people may take place in French or English and will be moderated by Mathilde Senécal, ARC project manager. In addition, Isabelle Laplante, head librarian with the CDC, will present a bibliography of complementary references on the topic.
This next activity in the Avec un grand R series is offered online and will be available for viewing for up to six months following the event. Anyone interested in signing up can fill out an online form. Individuals from institutions (i.e., staff, research unit and research committee members) that make a contribution to ARC will be allowed to participate free of charge. Otherwise, the fees are outlined in the fee schedule. A reduced fee is offered to members of ARC and AQPC.
