LOUIS RIEL SCHOOL DIVISION
Zailey Cameron wins the Nutrien Indigenous Youth Financial Management Award

March 3, 2023

The Louis Riel School Division would like to congratulate Zailey Cameron on her accomplishment on being selected as the Nutrien Indigenous Youth Financial Management Award recipient.

There is a great demand within Indigenous communities and off-reserve for Indigenous financial management professionals and there are many opportunities for those who want to pursue this career path and many sources of assistance. However, very few young people are pursuing an education in financial management after high school. That is why AFOA Canada and Nutrien have come together to offer the Nutrien Indigenous Youth Financial Management Awards and Scholarship Program.

At Dakota Collegiate Institute (DCI), Zailey uses her role as an Indigenous Youth Leader to teach her peers cultural traditions and volunteers her time to share her gift of dancing with the broader community at DCI's Winter Solstice Ceremonies. Zailey is a strong and committed powwow dancer who travels all over Canada and the United States to dance traditional jingle.

"Zailey has demonstrated strong ties to her Anishinaabe/Swampy Cree culture and community at Dakota Collegiate Institute," said Christy Capner, a teacher at DCI.

In Grade 10, Zailey was awarded the Dakota Collegiate Oshkabaywis Award. This award recognizes one student who embodies the essence of Indigenous culture by giving of self and building community.

"In a student body of over 1300 with over 250 self-identified Indigenous students, this speaks volumes to Zailey's leadership," said Christy.

Zailey and her mom attended the AFOA Canada's National Conference in Ottawa from Feb. 13 to 17 to receive her award. At the conference, students are introduced to career opportunities in financial management, meet financial management and academic professionals, as well as Indigenous Leaders.
