Lethbridge School Division's Indigenous Education team was honoured with an award Wednesday (Oct 9) evening at the 2024 Business Awards Gala with the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce.
On Oct. 9 at The Coast Lethbridge Hotel & Conference Centre, the Division took home the Spirit of Reconciliation Award.
The award is dedicated to an organization that has made a significant and positive social or economic impact in the Lethbridge community through their commitment to reconciliation.
By actively promoting and fostering reconciliation efforts, the Division has played a pivotal role in bridging divides, fostering understanding and creating a more inclusive and harmonious community.
"It was truly an honour of accepting and speaking on behalf of Lethbridge School Division, with receiving this award," said Joel Tailfeathers, the Division's Coordinator of Indigenous Education. "I get the opportunity to work with two phenomenal teachers in Melanie Morrow and Shawnee Big Bull."
Tailfeathers added the Division has a massive responsibility to its Indigenous student population - one the Division takes very seriously.
"We have a huge task of supporting close to 1,000 Indigenous students and families within our Division," he said. "When we have successful students within our Division, we will have successful families in the Lethbridge community. Our main goal is giving our students and families a better sense of belonging in our schools. Our Indigenous Education team helps support 24 schools in Sikoohkotoki and we look forward to supporting our Division in their path to reconciliation."
Each year, the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce recognizes the contributions of outstanding businesses, entrepreneurs and professionals. With 10 categories, the Lethbridge Business Awards highlights individuals and organizations that demonstrate achievements and excellence while bringing the city's business community together.
The gala event presents an opportunity for sponsors, nominees and Lethbridge businesses to showcase their organization to the region's business leaders, in media and throughout the Chamber's network.
